Soto Betawi Afung: Pop-Up Store at PASAR MOI (Until 15 September 2017)

 Soto Betawi Afung

I am Indonesia, and I love local food. Nothing tastes as good as Indonesian food from my perspective, especially when it comes to soto. Soto (re chicken/beef stew) is a lot in Jakarta, and you can find it easily on the side part of the city. But, are you looking for the best one or affordable one? Both words have been applied right here. Perhaps, Soto Betawi Afung is what I mean.

Running for more than 35 years, Soto Betawi Afung has survived the test of time. The recipe flowed over 2 generation and never change but always improve. It has been proven by my parent's statements that surely compared what they taste now and what they feel in the past. "Dagingnya empuk, wanginya enak, dan kuahnya daging banget (the meat is thoroughly tender, the aroma is sweet, and the broth is meaty as well)" - Handajani's Parents. I have a good discussion with the owner of this business called Mr. Henry. He explained that his mother is the one who elevates this business and makes it pretty consistent. He just brings it to the new level of operations perspective with a touch of modernity. Such a pretty solid business idea.

They have three different outlets. But, let me highlight the pop-up store one in PASAR MOI that is lasted until 15 September (pray for longer duration :)). Once you stepped inside the venue, you might see a small kiosk at the corner with two/three staffs await you there. Getting insights, you can see a table full of meat with piping hot soup and melinjo crackers. What captured my attention recently is the beautiful aroma of that broth and live cutting meat show. Also, the crowd itself is unstoppable. More customer comes during lunch time and dinner time. Therefore, I recommend you to come before/after that period.

The choice of meat including beef knuckles, intestines, liver, lung, beef tendon, sirloin, and tenderloin. All of them comes in lovely settings with the freshest display. I love the organs and tenderloin that's juicy and packed with flavor. You can choose either one type of meat or mixed it all of them. For the first timer, mixed all meat together in one bowl is a good idea! 🙂

I never get enough of the coconut milk version of soto called Soto Betawi Santan. Featuring the mixed of meat with a fresh cut of tomatoes and potatoes; bathed in a creamy broth. It's juicy, tender, and fulfilling. I can feel the meat has soaked up the richness of that soup that becomes so tasty on its own while the soup itself is pretty strong and intense in flavor. Paired with steam rice, your perfect dining experience is here.

 Soto Mie Daging

The second option here is Soto Mie Daging. The main differences between this and the previous item are they didn't use any coconut milk on that broth, so it's clear and just meaty enough for my liking. Taste wise, the soup is packed with a punch that comes from that meat and lovely light as well. The noodle is just beautiful and springy enough that goes well with extra chili if you love too. Just dig in and enjoy! 🙂

For the beverage, since they own a pop-up store only, some canned drinks and mineral water available. Just remember, they are specialized in the main course, not the beverage.

 Soto Betawi Afung

Soto Betawi Afung is one of the legendary Indonesian food in Jakarta. Owning four different outlets (including this pop-up store) show their credibility to satisfy your tummy properly. Taste wise, the Soto Betawi Santan is too good to be true! 🙂
