Beach Road Scissor-Cut Curry Rice is one of the oldest curry rice in Singapore. Established for more than 80 years, this prestigious brand has been awarded by many local and international media as the best local food stall for curry and gravy. As its title suggest, the name is literally exactly what happens. Every protein that you choose will be cut into several pieces and drizzled with gooey curry sauce. Quite simple history with magnificent philosophy.
Tucked away in Beach Road, Scissors Cut Curry Rice own a very spacious dining area with longstanding food cabinet at the front of the restaurant. Sort of random fried food, fresh vegetables, and Chinese cuisines is all there to capture your attention. Actually, this venue has been refurbished and renovated several times without leaving its traditional concept. The owner who owns this restaurant would never stop serving the customer that create a long queue during meal time. Just find your seat first before making your order. Quite often, you can share the table with other strangers as well.
The food is abundant and it would be very difficult to choose since everything looks so good. Around 20 different ingredients made fresh daily including the gooey-creamy sauce and stewed cabbage. At this stage, I will lead you to the best plate of curry rice.
Seafood fanatic would be greeted by the crispy-juicy battered Jumbo Prawn (S$ 1.00 / piece). Just look at the mountain of prawn right there. Whenever you bite it, there would be a crunch sensation at first followed by the tenderness of that meat. You just won't missed this. Don't you?
I also try the Braised Pork (S$ 1.00 / piece) that taste quite sweet but absolutely tender. The sauce is the real winner. It's gooey, creamy and flavourful.
Instead of pork cutlet go straight to the Chicken Cutlet (S$ 1.00 / piece). A perfectly battered chicken sprinkled with sesame seeds is undeniably delicious. I love the crispy texture of that skin while that meat remains moist at the core.
Stewed Cabbage (S$ 0.60) is must-try. It has been cooked until pale green and kind of wet. Drizzled with extra curry and soy sauce, this menu can be eaten alone.
Personally, I love their Tau Pok (S$ 0.60) and French Beans (S$ 0.60). It's soft, fresh, and well balanced. You will love the crunchiness of both dishes when it goes with a spoon full of gravy and rice. Within that price tag, I can order more than one. How do you think?
After mixing all together, here is my plate of Hainanese Curry Rice (S$ 4.80). Featuring all the beautiful ingredients above with extra gravy on top of it. Just have it while it warm for the best experience.
Still not enough? You can take away another plate of this like I did before. It still looks messy, but sinfully delicious.
Beach Road Scissor-Cut Curry Rice is one of the best Singapore local food ever. It's humble, messy, and totally affordable. It has been unveiled the real essence of good food by the hands of our local.
