When you start typing on Google like the best café in Singapore or maybe the best croissant in Orchard, Tiong Bahru Bakery is always on top of the list. It is not because they do a lot of advertisement like any other else's does, but it is because they set a high-quality pastry like no other. That is why this café is always packed with people.
Founded in 2012 by celebrity baker Gontran Cherrier, Tiong Bahru Bakery is not-so-new but survive over time. So far they got 3 outlets in Singapore. The one that you see here is located in Orchard area.
Occupying a small corner at Tangs Plaza Level 1, this venue capable of handling around 20 people at the same time. There is a tourist there, a group of business person, and more loyal customer like me. None of them is even familiar with this place.
Stepped inside the venue, guest can see a modern interior design with a touch of gold and green. The ambiance itself is just warm and comfort enough for you to stay a bit longer. I do love the big food gallery at the front that showcases everything fresh and delicious. Just follow the queue line and find out whatever you like there. The humble and friendly staff is more than ready to take your order quickly with a smile.
More than 30+ pastry available there, but only a few of them is totally stand out. If you ask me personally, Green Tea Almond Croissant (S$ 4.00) is the best here. The pastry is flaky on the outside but remains buttery on the inside. Also, there is a rich green tea filling at the core that totally sweet and smooth. When it goes together to your mouth, the dynamite flavor will surprise you. I ever try so many croissants in my entire life, but none can be as good as this.
Next thing to be tasted here is Kouign Amann (S$ 3.50). A simple French pastry containing layers of butter and sugar is undeniably delicious. The pastry is crunchy with sweet caramelized texture and quite buttery as well. Just have this with a cup of latte for the best experience. How do you think?
The other crowd pleaser menu here is Berries Crumble (S$ 6.80) which taste so sweet and fruity. I love the thick pastry layer with more crumble on top of it. Crunchy, sweet, and creamy on every bite of it.
From the savory side, go try the Speciality Bun with Ham and Cheese (S$ 9.00). Featuring the handmade soft bun with tender pieces of ham, salty cheese, and fresh lettuce. It's salty, soft, and flavorful. Even though it looks simple, the flavor has satisfied me a lot. Taste better than my expectation before.
Most of you might be looking for the most Instagenic one like Charcoal Bun with Salmon and Tomato (S$ 9.00). A black-buttery bun with tender pieces of meat and fresh lettuce as well. Whenever you press it, you can feel all the juiciness and moistness remain there. Compare to the previous one, I can say both of them is good, but I do love the Speciality Bun with Ham and Cheese more. It's simply tasty, though.
I always love to have a cup of Latte (S$ 5.50) with that choice of pastry. It's nutty, strong, and quite acidic as well. The perfect ratio between milk and espresso is what impress me a lot, beside that beautiful latte art on top.
Tiong Bahru Bakery is my number one destination for a croissant and kouign amann in Singapore. All the pastry is made fresh and tastes undeniably delicious. Besides that, all the menu comes at an affordable price and none of them cost you above S$ 10.00. From the Instagram perspective, you can take a lot of picture here that perfectly match your profile. Foodies, this is what you are looking for.
