Singapore's culinary scene is full of fun. Last month, we just welcomed the presence of Botanist, Pho-losophy, etc. And now, we got another newcomer called Don Maeji who served the authentic and innovative bowl of the tendon in tasteful settings. Brought to you by Ramen Champion, Don Meijin headed by the Japanese head chef who is really passionate about cooking and humble as well. Each menu is made fresh upon order, so the guest needs to wait a bit longer until the meal is ready. Knowing they hit a trending topic across social media, just prepare yourself for the queue during meal time.
Tucked away in Bugis+, Don Meijin occupied a small space inside Ramen Champion area. With traditional Japanese décor, open kitchen theme and spacious table settings, foodies can find their seat freely and smell the beautiful aroma of nicely cooked tempura. First of all, don't get confused if the waiter gives you a special tag for order. This small rounded badge is pretty useful to purchase any kind of foods or beverages within the area.
Straight away to the crowd pleaser menu called Spicy Chilli Crab Sauce Tendon (S$ 14.80). A bowl that combines 5 types of tempura, homemade chili crab sauce and the bed of rice. 5 types of tempura including asparagus, eggplant, pumpkin, salmon and long beans. What impresses me a lot is that humble presentation which uncovered the real taste of it. All the tempura is nicely executed with a crispy exterior and juicy interior while that sauce is simply hot and delicious. Knowing that this meal is served in limited quantity daily, make sure to order this while it last. One thing that is need to be improved is the portion which is quite small compared to its contender. However, I really like this and give it 4 stars out of 5.
Back to the original version of Tendon (S$ 13.80). Basically, by removing that chili crab sauce, the flavor is still good, though. You can feel the richness of that homemade Japanese soy sauce and more crispiness from that tempura. It pretty makes sense to say that the previous one is much more delicious than this. However, in terms of crispiness and originality, this menu is much better.
For the beverages, make sure to try the Iced Calamansi (S$ 3.00) to remove the oily and sticky texture on your tongue. Perhaps, it is not too sweet, but absolutely refreshing.
Don Meijin has set a new trend in Singapore's culinary scene. The Spicy Chilli Crab Sauce Tendon is outstanding together with the warm ambiance that makes you stay a bit longer. Instead of any other type of tendon that I ever try in Singapore, this one is more interesting and worth a try.
