Affordable, with a wide array of authentic and delicious Thai food, Khun-Yai is one of the hidden gems in Beauty World Food Market. Owned by a Thai couple who live in Singapore for a long period of time, each menu is delivered in remarkable aroma and strong presentation. As the results, the kitchen is kept busy all day long and the customer joins a long queue that can be more than 25 minutes.
The secret of this food stall is located in its simplicity and honesty. Established for more than years without any changing in its style and design. With a rack of spices at the front, the big picture of their menu and friendly hospitality from the owner, each customer would easily spot them and leave satisfied. The customer also allows doing a self-service which means they can take whatever they want include chili, peanut, lime or soy sauce, cutleries, etc, and finished by returning the tray and plate to them. Knowing the owner is the only staff here, by taking this responsibility, you can reduce the queue, and help them to be more efficient in serving everything.
We start from the crowd-pleasing menu called Seafood Omelette (S$ 6.00). A perfectly cooked thin omelet filled with fresh seafood is unbelievably delicious. The juiciness of prawn, crispiness of that skin and spiciness of chili sauce is all there. We definitely impressed by its simple presentation, as it clearly represents the real flavor of it. Notable occupied without having this. Does it mean a good sign for you to try it?
Seafood Pad Thai (S$ 5.00) is another crowd favorite. Featuring the nicely thin noodle coated in thick soy sauce and cooked together with fresh seafood would deliver a strong wok flavor like no other. It's sweet, salty, and well presented. Together with peanuts and bean sprouts on the side, guest can mix it up altogether for more dynamic flavor and texture. Within that price range, we do consider this as one of the best in its class.
If you are looking for the rice menu, be sure to try the Pineapple Fried Rice (S$ 5.00). Basically, the pineapple infused flavor is quite strong on that plate. Whenever you scoop it, you will smell the good aroma as well. But still, we do prefer the Seafood Pad Thai more. It is more satisfying in terms of flavor and texture. Even the price is just the same with this.
Khun-Yai is definitely far from being the best in its class, but they are worth a try. Good food in simple presentation and affordable prices would never bring you down. Perhaps, it will bring back your mood. The most important things, in this case, is the owner is absolutely friendly and deliver a consistent meal all the time. Do follow this guide and you will be survived.
