A throwback to the good old memories, some of you might find an abundance options for food within the school canteen. Ranging from the remarkable local food creation to the Western favorite like sandwiches is all there at relatively low prices. And yes, somehow we do miss that kind of food. Instead of spending more than S$ 20.00 for glamorous food that tastes standard, it's better to have this remarkable hotplate dishes that is absolutely wallet friendly. None menu costs you above S$ 5.50, and even they offer a unique type of fries within S$ 2.00 only. Sounds great? Hotplate @ Makan has successfully captured our team's attention.
Located exactly at the canteen of Ngee Ann Polytechnic, this venue has been invaded by students and some office worker within the area. The place is absolutely simple, not even decorated but packed with people. After you reaching the front line of the counter, you will find the warmth hospitality from their crew and responsive service that never takes your time above 10 minutes. We definitely impressed by this system. It is not about how nice or fancies the venue is, but it is just about consistency to greet each customer with a smile and time-saving as well. The first impression is absolutely great.
We do visit this place in random basis in order to investigate how they maintain its food quality over time. As the results, we come up with this brief review.
Start with the all-time favorite menu here called Salted Egg Chicken (S$ 4.50). A perfectly cooked chicken with a thin batter and topped with rich salted egg sauce is quite delicious. The right consistency for that sauce is almost there, but certainly not fit with our standard. However, the best part of this menu is located on that meat which is juicy, crispy and absolutely tender. It goes well with the steam rice on the side and absolutely comforting.
We order this menu over and over again because it's absolutely satisfying in terms of flavor and texture. Sweet and Sour Chicken with Egg (S$ 5.50) might be the best menu at this venue. As you can see, that chicken is nicely executed with crispy and golden brown skin at the outside while at the inside, the meat is just tender and moist. Topped with that homemade sauce, this menu puts emphasis on the well-balanced flavor which is not too sweet but a bit of salty and tangy. Ask for extra saturation and texture on that plate by adding the half cooked egg with runny yolk as well. Mixed it up together while it warmth and you can smell how fragrant the aroma is. Definitely brilliant.
Still not enough? They also sell the Cheese Fries (S$ 2.00) that taste really good. The cheese sauce is thick and flavourful, that goes well with that thick cut fries.
Another benefit for each guest is they give a free homemade soup to be paired with any menu. Just take it exactly at the counter.
Overall, Hotplate at Makan Place is worth a try. The food is nicely executed and the staff is well trained. They are not the best in its class, but they strive to bring the best for each guest. Do expect for remarkable Sweet and Sour Chicken with Egg or even Cheese Fries.
